Christmas 1970s-style: colored lights, homemade costumes, a church full of children...and one angel who probably should never have been standing that high.
Archie is a part-time assistant pastor at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where preparations for the annual Christmas play are already heading toward disaster.
His oldest sons, David and Gary, are thrilled to take part.
Nine-year-old Sue isn't.
When Sue finally admits that she doesn't believe in God or Jesus, her honesty sends an unexpected tremor through the family—especially through her mother, Edith.
Edith has called herself a Christian since childhood. She walked the aisle. She repeated the prayer. She was baptized. She went to church, married a Christian man, raised her children in faith, and eventually became an assistant pastor's wife.
But when Sue asks one innocent question—
“But when did you start believing?”
—Edith realizes she doesn't know the answer.
While one mother begins confronting the difference between knowing about Jesus and truly surrendering to Him, Cedar Grove is preparing to tell the Christmas story with cardboard buildings, bathrobes, troublesome shepherds, a determined director, and a homemade angel platform that Archie keeps insisting isn't safe.
Nobody listens.
They probably should have.
Set against a nostalgic 1970s East Tennessee Christmas, The Year the Angel Fell is a warm, funny, faith-filled story about family, honest questions, imperfect Christians, and the Savior at the heart of Christmas.
And somewhere between a falling angel and a long-awaited Christmas snow, two hearts may finally discover what it means to believe.
