There is a particular kind of weariness that comes not from having gone too far, but from having gone on for too long. The poems in this collection begin there.
Again and again, their speaker is in motion: running through snow toward a distant beacon, wandering abandoned tunnels, returning to places he once swore never to see again, following the traces of vanished years, approaching death, memory, God, or simply the next morning. Yet this movement is not the journey of someone who knows where he is going. It is the movement of someone who has learned that stopping may be more frightening than continuing.
These poems are deeply concerned with endurance. Not heroic endurance, but the exhausted persistence of a person who has lost much of what once gave direction to life and yet continues forward. Roads, bridges, tunnels, water, snow, autumn, darkness, and distant light form a landscape where destinations remain uncertain. What matters is the act of crossing.
Poetry itself becomes part of that crossing. In I Have Fashioned All Songs Born of Sorrow, the poet surveys the remains of his creative life: songs without voices, books that cannot shelter him, memories returning to empty rooms. Yet even here there is faith in the act of seeing. The poet may not change the past, but he can still recognize grandeur in ordinary things.
Throughout the collection, familiar objects are transformed by an almost mythic light. A mother's house becomes a place of pilgrimage, a mirror a threshold, a moth an emblem of fragile hope, a tunnel both coffin and womb. Autumn becomes a recurring language of departure. Even buses, stations, cars, beer, tobacco, and crowded streets take on the weight of ancient symbols.
The contemporary and the archaic exist side by side. Cigarettes stand beside Paradise, city parking lots beside Tartarus, everyday life beside angels, demons, Eden, and the Gospel. Myth is not treated as something buried in the past. It remains alive because the conflicts it contains remain alive within us.
The collection's deepest battlefield is the self. The speaker confronts guilt, shame, lost youth, lost love, temptation, death, and the consequences of his own choices. Yet he rarely blames the world entirely. He carries responsibility with him, and this creates the book's moral tension. The past is not merely something that happened to him. It is something in which he participated.
Again and again, what remains is memory. In these poems memory has weight, colour, texture, and temperature. It wounds, but it also prevents disappearance. This is why returning becomes such an important gesture. The speaker repeatedly leaves, only to return to old rooms, old loves, faith, wounds, his mother, and his forgotten poems. Each return changes both the place and the traveller.
The poet does not defeat sorrow. He gives it a voice.
And perhaps this is the meaning of the collection's recurring weariness. The road is long, the speaker no longer young, and some doors will never open again. Yet beyond the darkness a beacon still burns. The poems never promise salvation. It is enough that the light remains visible.
These are poems written after certainty has become impossible, but before silence has become final. The road continues. The song continues. And somewhere beyond the snow, the light is still burning.
