Grace and peace to you, my beloved fellow servants. I have written these letters because I care about your ministry, but even more than that, I care about your soul. A chaplain can learn how to organize a service, lead a prayer, counsel a student, and stand behind a pulpit, yet still be uncertain about the great truths that must hold the ministry together. Skill may open a door, but doctrine will help you remain faithful once you walk through it. Giftedness may draw attention, but truth will give your life roots when applause is gone and the assignment becomes costly.
These letters are not meant to turn you into cold theologians with full notebooks and empty hearts. No, family. We are after a theology that kneels, listens, weeps, worships, witnesses, repents, serves, and stands. We need doctrine with a pulse. We need truth that knows how to sit beside a hospital bed, walk with a doubting student, confront injustice, confess failure, honor the local church, and proclaim Jesus Christ without shame. The Chaplains Collective must know what it believes, but it must also show what those beliefs look like when they become flesh in the life of a Christian university.
Read these letters slowly. Open every Scripture. Discuss them around the table. Ask where our practice agrees with our confession and where it does not. Pray over the campus, the students, the faculty, the staff, the administration, the churches, and the nations God has gathered here. Then take one faithful step. Doctrine is not complete when we can repeat it. Doctrine has done its holy work when, by the Spirit, it teaches us to love God and neighbor more truthfully.
I write as your Senior Chaplain, but I also write as a fellow pilgrim who is still learning to trust the Lord. I have seen God keep ministers through joy and sorrow, fruitfulness and disappointment, clarity and mystery. And this much I know: Jesus is faithful. So let these letters call us back to Scripture, back to prayer, back to holiness, back to mission, and back to the Christ who holds His servants in His hands.
With affection, expectation, and prayer,
The Rev. Dr. Angulus D. Wilson
Senior Chaplain, Wheaton College
