For more than half a century, Western democracies have represented the political benchmark for modern societies. In the aftermath of the Second World War, they ensured institutional stability, economic growth, and the expansion of civil and social rights. Today, however, this balance appears increasingly fragile.
The growing concentration of wealth, the influence of economic elites over political decision-making, the crisis of political parties, and the manipulation of public opinion are progressively hollowing out the substance of democratic representation. At the same time, the emergence of alternative political models—from China to Russia—is challenging the idea that liberal democracy represents the only possible horizon of political modernity.
Through a historical and theoretical analysis ranging from the origins of democratic thought to the transformations of contemporary capitalism, this book investigates the underlying causes of democracy’s crisis in the age of neoliberalism.
The decisive question, then, becomes another: is it possible to renew democracy by freeing it from the dominance of powerful economic interests?
The future of democracy will depend on our ability to rebuild genuinely representative political institutions, limit the concentration of economic power, and restore citizens’ control over collective decision-making.
