Lit Liberation Junior: Pre-K Resilient Regulation Curriculum
Little Readers. Big Feelings. Lifelong Skills.
Help young learners build the emotional, coping, relationship, and resilience skills they need—one story at a time.
Lit Liberation Junior: Pre-K Resilient Regulation Curriculum is a 30-lesson, story-based curriculum integrating social-emotional learning (SEL), DBT-informed skills, and resilience-building practices into meaningful early literacy experiences.
Organized into six developmental units, the curriculum guides children from recognizing and honoring emotions to choosing effective responses, practicing empathy, strengthening relationships, exploring purpose, and integrating the skills they have learned:
Unit 1: Honor Your Emotions
Unit 2: Elect Your Responses
Unit 3: Apply Empathy
Unit 4: Reignite Your Relationships
Unit 5: Transform With Purpose
Unit 6: Integration & Review
Each lesson centers on a carefully selected picture book and provides opportunities to learn through interactive read-alouds, guided discussion, skill practice, movement, play, art, reflection, and hands-on activities. Lessons are designed for approximately 45 minutes and can be taught weekly, adapted to classroom schedules, or revisited for additional skill practice.
Throughout the curriculum, children develop practical skills for naming emotions, noticing body signals, coping with strong feelings, using supportive self-talk, communicating needs, resolving conflicts, appreciating differences, building supportive relationships, and making meaningful choices. These skills come together through Resilient Regulation—helping children develop the language, tools, relationships, and confidence to navigate difficult feelings successfully.
The resilience component is grounded in the creator’s research exploring literary texts as protective factors in resilience development, with particular attention to social support, coping, positive emotions, and meaning in life. Stories provide a developmentally appropriate space for children to explore emotions, relationships, challenges, choices, and possibilities.
Designed for Pre-K educators, early childhood professionals, counselors, and other adults supporting young learners, this curriculum provides a structured framework while encouraging adaptation for children’s developmental, communication, sensory, cultural, and individual needs.
