Nell Pruitt pours the coffee, stamps the mail, and holds this island's paper. Six days
later the one man who wanted to know whose ground that churchyard sits on is found at the
bottom of the bank, face down, under eight inches of fresh clay — and the footprints
in it only go up.
To find out who put him there, Nell is going to have to open a marriage entry from 1955,
a squall that took four men in 1953, and the reason a hundred and ninety people have spent
seventy-five years calling a man by a name that was never his.
