An Evening at the Library is from Dena Darvish Derakhshan, the author of Poetry of Darvish, Rants 'N' Raves, and Attractive Woman. These are the ten longest poems from his collection, gathered in print for the first time.
The voice is plainspoken, restless, and funny in the way that only someone who is genuinely fed up can be. In "Corrupting," he asks why the people who want power are the last ones who should have it. In "When We Get Spooky," he walks Santa Monica Boulevard alone on Halloween. "Stand-In" turns a thirty-minute wait for chicken and waffles into a study of everything we line up for without asking why. "Cause That's What I'm After (if only)" is a litany of all the small fixes that were supposed to make life work. "Aged Like Milk" is a forty-year-old's answer to hustle culture: no thanks, naptime is at two.
Then the book goes somewhere darker and more tender. "Each Day," "Glitter Tears," "Papa's Blues," and "Abandoned" sit with survival, family, faith, and the pain that comes from being let down by all three. "Silver" closes the collection with a quiet love poem about secrets kept from a night on the sand.
It's poetry for people who don't usually read poetry: direct, unpretentious, and unafraid to say the quiet part out loud. Politics, God, work, sex, Halloween, exes, and the internet all get their turn.
Dedicated to libraries and librarians everywhere.
