What do I do between appointments?
That is the question nobody answers. You leave the session, you have a week until the next one, and you do not know what to practise or whether you are doing it right.
This book is what I did.
I had a blood clot in my brain. I could not remember my own name, my wife, or my three year old son. I could not speak at all. Words came out that made no sense and I mixed several languages into one sentence. It took a year of speech therapy and a second year of practicing on my own.
Inside are 57 exercises, the ones my therapist used with me, organized by what you are trying to do rather than by clinical category:
Finding the word · Getting the sentence out · Understanding what people say · Reading · Writing · Real situations · Talking with people · Keeping going
Designed for someone mid recovery. Large print. One exercise per page. Room to write. No clutter. Twelve picture cards and four scene pages at the back to practise with.
There is also a chapter you will not find in any other book on this subject: the things I was told to do that did nothing for me. Every other book is a list of what is supposed to work. None of them tells you which ones to skip.
There is a page for the person helping you, too. Count to ten before offering a word. Do not finish sentences. Give the first sound, not the answer.
There were good days and bad days. That is the part that taught me the most. Do not rush this. Be patient with yourself.
I am not a speech therapist. I am someone who went through it. Talk to your own therapist before you change anything.
