How can every bore pass the gauge at the plant, yet 1.9 percent turn up undersize at the customer's inspection, without anyone misreading a single instrument?

In the Chapter 21 case study, the answer is temperature, a worn air-gauge nozzle, and a setting ring stored in the wrong place. Industrial length measurement has been referenced to 20 °C since 1931. An aluminum housing measured warm from the washer is a different size from the same housing at that reference temperature, and here the difference cost a third of the tolerance.

That is the kind of problem this book prepares you to solve: not a formula in isolation, but a working method applied to a real part, with a result you can defend.

Applied Manufacturing Engineering follows a product from material to finished part in 26 chapters: engineering materials and heat treatment; drawings, GD&T, and design for manufacture and assembly; casting, powder metallurgy, forming, polymer, and composite processing; machining and CNC, grinding, welding, joining, coatings, additive manufacturing, and electronics assembly; and metrology, statistical quality control, automation and Industry 4.0, production planning, lean manufacturing, and cost.

Every chapter opens with six to eight measurable objectives (what you should be able to calculate, select, design, or diagnose) and teaches through numbered equations and worked examples in both SI and US customary units. Each closes with an industry case study and fifteen practice problems, with answers to all 390 in the book.

What you will be able to do:

  • Calculate takt time, bottleneck capacity, overall equipment effectiveness, and rolled throughput yield for a serial line, and find where the output is really going
  • Specify datums, tolerances, and fits from function, apply material condition modifiers, and run a tolerance stack-up
  • Size gates and risers for a casting, predict springback in a bend, and read a polymer processing window
  • Predict tool life, choose an economic cutting speed, and plan setups so that features joined by a tight tolerance share one datum reference
  • Set preheat and heat input for a crack-sensitive steel weld, and specify fastener preload rather than torque alone
  • Run a gauge repeatability and reproducibility study, build control charts, and calculate process capability
  • Balance an assembly line, set inventory and scheduling rules, and choose a maintenance strategy from failure data
  • Estimate part cost with machine-hour rates and learning curves, and compare investments by net present value

Six appendices supply what the calculations need: units and conversions, properties of engineering materials, machining data, ISO tolerance grades and preferred fits, statistical tables, and a standards reference. A glossary, an abbreviations list, and a full index complete the book.

Written for engineering students and practicing manufacturing engineers. Table and example values are typical ranges for learning and preliminary design; verify the actual material, machine, and process before any production decision.

Facing a process problem? Open its chapter, start with the defect, cause, and remedy table, and work forward.
