When the Body Speaks
I no longer believe my body betrayed me.
For a long time, I thought illness was something that arrived to steal-my sense of safety, my certainty, my future. But survival taught me something quieter and far more enduring: my body had been speaking long before it ever collapsed into crisis.
I just didn't know how to listen.
I learned that emotions are not inconveniences. They are not weaknesses. They are signals-alarms from the nervous system, asking for attention, asking for care, asking for truth. When ignored, they do not disappear. They wait. They gather. They find another way to speak.
For me, survival became a classroom. Not because suffering was chosen, and not because illness is a gift-but because when everything familiar fell away, I had no choice but to enter into relationship with my body for the first time.
I began to notice where fear lived.
Where grief tightened my chest.
Where silence held more truth than words.
I learned that healing did not mean forcing emotions away. It meant learning how to hold them without letting them take over. I stopped carrying everything inside my chest like an alarm that never shut off. Instead, I began to acknowledge what I felt, name it, and set it beside me-so my body could breathe again.
I discovered that when emotions are witnessed rather than resisted, the nervous system softens. Balance becomes possible. The body remembers that it is safe enough to rest.
Grace, I learned, does not arrive by bypassing the body.
It arrives through listening to it.
I did not heal by fighting myself.
I healed by learning how to live with myself-fully present, fully awake, and no longer afraid of what I feel.
The battle did not end when the threat passed.
The battle ended when I stopped treating my body as the enemy and allowed it to become my guide.
