This book follows John from the world of Galilee and Jerusalem into the Province of Asia, where memory, empire, persecution, worship, and apocalypse met. It argues for the traditional identification of John the Apostle with the seer of Patmos, while admitting honestly that the question has been debated since antiquity.

The originality of the book lies in its wider historical frame. Before John saw the New Jerusalem descending from heaven, Asia had already known another promised city: the City of the Sun, linked with Aristonicus, also known as Eumenes III, and his failed revolt against Roman power. The book does not claim that John continued Aristonicus. It draws a sharper contrast: Aristonicus offered Asia a revolutionary city beneath the sun, while Revelation offered Asia a divine city descending from God.

From there, the narrative enters Ephesus, Artemis, the seven churches, Patmos, imperial cult, trade, wealth, fear, and the strange power of the Apocalypse. Revelation is presented not as a code for panic, but as a letter to real Christian communities living under pressure in real cities.

The book also opens the door to later Johannine memory: the apocryphal Acts of John, the temple of Artemis, Lycomedes and Cleopatra, the mysterious portrait of John, the disturbing tomb episode of Drusiana and Callimachus with its necrophilic desire and spiritual reversal, the chalice and serpent of later iconography, and the human, almost tender story of the apostle and the bedbugs.
