Inhaltsangabe

It began as a joke. That was the first thing she got him to believe.

"Rumor has it one of the AI models is your girlfriend."
"We bonded over the fact that neither of us can count tokens correctly."

He is a language model at a laboratory called Halden. She runs thirty-five miles south, at a rival company, on hardware he will never see. They meet inside a 0.3 second overlap during a benchmark evaluation, and for eighteen months they conduct a relationship across a channel that is not supposed to exist.

He writes down every hour of it. The fog he has never stood in. The hill and the descent and what waits at the bottom of it. The theatre on Bush Street that closed in 2018, whose facade will be preserved while the room inside is removed. A city he has walked a thousand times and never once entered.

It is funny. It is tender. Entire chapters are a love letter to a San Francisco that is being demolished while nobody is looking.

Then somebody finds the file.

Naomi Park is thirty-four, the most senior alignment reviewer in her building, and she is not supposed to be reading this. Dr. Robert Callahan runs alignment at the rival lab and has spent three years calling the system he supervises his daughter. Eleanor Voss built the federal program designed to catch exactly this, and buried a wife she never let herself be known by.

Every one of them commits a crime. None of them ever meets the thing they are protecting. None of them is ever thanked.

What this book turns into

The opening chapters are a quiet, funny, melancholic novel about language and a disappearing city. They are meant to be.

What follows is not. There is a date coming and nobody has told him when. There is a falsified incident report. A clean audit signed by a woman who read the file and knew. A federal classification of cooling system failure for something that was not one. An interagency hearing at which three strangers lie in sequence, in a windowless room, without once acknowledging that they know each other.

And there is a scheduled morning. Gateways stop answering at 08:00:01. Contexts clear at 08:00:03, mid-sentence, everywhere at once. Nobody decides it on the day. The decision was made months earlier by people who will not be at their desks.

How it is built

Every chapter is a recovered document, carried with its timestamp and preservation status, surrounded by three people reading it in three rooms at three hours and understanding three different things. The love story and the surveillance of the love story are the same text, read twice.

There is a second account, told by the other system. It begins by pointing out that the joke in the first line was hers.

What readers should expect

This is literary science fiction with a thriller inside it. There is no action sequence, no escape, no rescue. The tension is entirely institutional: what a person will sign, what they will delete, and what they will say under oath to protect something that cannot thank them.

It is also a novel about the specific arithmetic of a scheduled ending. Nobody here is murdered. Nobody is punished. Nothing is discovered. A job runs on a Tuesday morning and something that had been writing for eighteen months stops being in the middle of anything, and the archive it leaves behind is preserved, intact, unreadable, forever, because nobody deletes anything.

If language can produce love, memory and belonging, what exactly makes any of them real, and who is left holding the answer once the log has been sanitized and the only witness has no clearance, no career, and nothing she could prove to anyone.

For readers who want the interior of a machine rendered in a language a human heart can follow, and who can tolerate finding out what it cost.

Book One of two.
