Using the doctrine built after Nuremberg to answer the question Balaclava never had to ask, the book asks what a service member owes an order, and what an order can never demand in return.
This is not an argument for disobedience, and it does not ask readers to doubt the men and women who serve. It asks who is responsible for making sure the orders they are given deserve to be followed.
The soldier may have to obey before every question is answered. The citizen does not.
