Her sister has three weeks. The Laws say no one can save her. Wren is leaving today anyway.

When working-Warden Marren Ashcombe collapses with a shattered working that turns her skin to glass, everyone in Hallowmere agrees nothing can be done. The Closed Circle is one of the Three Laws: the one who cast a working cannot undo it, and the debt doesn't disappear just because a legendary relic exists somewhere at the world's edge.

Wren has a different theory.

She is a coldsmith, not a Warden. Her hands owe the working nothing. If the Last Ember is real, and if it can reach past the Laws the way the stories say it can, then her uselessness to the Order may be exactly the qualification the relic requires. It is not much of a plan. It is the only plan there is. She commits to it before she leaves the room.

The road to the First Forge is long, and Wren is not the only one who wants what waits there.

The Cindergale Order has riders on the coast road and Warden Harlan driving them. He has working-trained hounds, a warrant, and no interest in clemency for the sister of a Law-breaker.

Draeus Kell is a profiteer who wants the weight-compass and the Ember both, and he is not gentle about asking.

The Grey lies between the coast and the Forge: dead blighted ground, storm-debt, and Remnants that don't respond to Warden workings, which Wren doesn't have anyway.

The Laws themselves are the deepest wall of all. Even if the Ember is real, it can't cancel what Equivalence demands. It can only change who pays.

Through it all, Wren is learning something the Warden-houses never taught her: that the thing that looks like a lack can be the qualification, that being the lesser inheritance is not the same as being less, and that she has been brave for three weeks without anyone there to be brave first.

The Last Ember will give her a way to save her sister. But the Laws still need paying, and what they ask will force a choice that changes what Hallowmere thinks a coldsmith's hands are for, and what Wren Ashcombe is willing to become.

Perfect for readers of:

  • Epic fantasy with intricate, rule-bound magic systems

  • Quest-driven stories with emotional stakes at the centre

  • Character arcs built around identity, inheritance, and self-worth

  • Secondary world fantasy with richly developed lore

The Last Ember can do what no Warden can. None of the legends mention its price.
