Frances E. W. Harper was the most widely read Black writer in nineteenth-century America — a poet, lecturer and reformer who spent forty years on the platform and in print. Her fiction is the least seen part of that work.
Three of the four novels ran as serials in the Christian Recorder and then vanished with the newspaper, unread for more than a century: Minnie's Sacrifice (1869), Sowing and Reaping (1876) and Trial and Triumph (1888). They stand here beside Iola Leroy (1892), the novel that made her name, and the two short pieces she published in the Anglo-African Magazine on either side of the war.
Ninety-four chapters, six works, one volume — the whole of her fiction, set from the original printings and given the page it has always deserved.
