There are questions we ask because we expect an answer, and there are questions we ask because they reveal the limits of every possible answer. “Why is there something rather than Nothing?” belongs to the second kind.

Its simplicity is deceptive. The question appears to contain a clear choice between two alternatives: existence and nonexistence. Something is present, although Nothing might have prevailed instead. We therefore seek the event, cause, necessity, or creative act that selected Being over emptiness.

But the closer we examine the question, the less stable its terms become. What do we mean by Something when we refer not to a particular object but to the totality of reality? What do we mean by Nothing when even empty space, darkness, zero, or a physical vacuum already contains structure? Can Nothing be called a possibility without preserving possibility itself? Can it precede the universe if time does not yet exist? Can it produce anything without possessing potentiality and thereby ceasing to be Nothing?

The conclusion may be unsettling in a different way from the original question. The greatest mystery may not be how Something emerged from Nothing. It may be why we ever believed that absolute Nothing was possible.
If Nothing cannot ontologically stand, then existence does not need to defeat it. Being remains—not as a completed answer, but as the foundation from which questions, worlds, and intelligence can arise.
