Preface: What if surviving wasn’t enough?
Some stories are born from imagination. Others emerge from memory, silence, and wounds that time can never completely erase.
The story you hold in your hands belongs to the latter.
Through these pages, Ludovic Juvénal GUENEKEAN opens a window into a childhood profoundly shaped by the violence of armed conflict in the Central African Republic. With sincerity and humility, he invites us to journey through a life marked by fear, displacement, loss, and uncertainty, but also by courage, hope, and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit.
This book is not merely the story of one man. It is the testimony of a generation of children who grew up in the shadow of war. A generation whose dreams were interrupted but never destroyed. A generation that learned at an early age that peace is not something to be taken for granted, but a precious gift that must be protected.
As the chapters unfold, readers will discover far more than a collection of memories. They will encounter faces, villages, traditions, simple joys, and profound tragedies. They will also witness the strength of family bonds, the solidarity of communities, and the hope that continues to endure even when everything seems lost.
In a world where statistics about conflicts often replace human stories, this testimony reminds us that behind every crisis are women, men, and children carrying dreams, sorrows, and an unbreakable dignity.
Ludovic writes neither to judge nor to reopen divisions. He writes to pass on a legacy. To preserve a personal memory that has become a collective one. To offer his children, his family, and future generations an inheritance of truth. Above all, he writes to give a voice to those who never had the opportunity to tell their own stories.
May these pages inspire compassion, encourage reflection, and remind each of us of the immeasurable value of peace.
For while the wounds of history may remain, they can also become the foundations of a more just and humane future.
It is in this spirit that I invite you to discover this story, to listen to a voice rising from the heart of the Central African Republic, and to walk for a few pages alongside a child who became a man without ever losing the light of hope.
Ludovic was eleven years old when he saw his city fall into the hands of the rebels. The son of a pastor, protected by the love of his family but quickly confronted with horror, he sets out on a flight through the bush of the Central African Republic. Alongside his mother and sisters, he traverses ruined villages, hostile forests , and deadly rivers, guided by his father’s faltering faith. Destination: Bangui. But the capital is far from being a refuge.
*The Death Road* is a visceral coming-of-age story, told through the voice of a survivor turned witness. Through sensitive storytelling, powerful dialogue, and precise language, this book sheds light on the fate of thousands of children caught in the crossfire of forgotten conflicts.
A tribute to those who flee, those who persevere, and those who never forget.
Happy reading.
