Inhaltsangabe

Most manufacturing problems are not solved at the machine. They are decided much earlier, when someone picks a process, a material, and a tolerance without seeing how the three collide.

Manufacturing knowledge arrives in pieces, and the pieces have drifted apart. Classic process references remain sound on cutting and forming but say little about digital production, condition-based maintenance, or the exposure that comes with a connected plant. Newer digital titles assume the process knowledge they sit on top of. The practical gap is sharper still: plenty of engineers can name the processes, but far fewer can size a riser, calculate a bend allowance on the correct neutral axis, or say what a capability index actually licenses them to promise. That gap is where scrap, rework, and unwinnable arguments with customers come from.

This handbook puts the whole production chain into one volume and one notation, and holds the same technical standard across all of it. Across eighteen chapters and 530 pages it follows a part from the material outward: through the casting, forming, machining, joining, and finishing routes that could produce it, through the automation, inspection, and quality systems that keep it repeatable, and on to the digital and environmental questions that decide whether the process is still worth running in five years. Every major process is presented with the mechanics that govern it, the equations that quantify it, and a worked calculation that carries the arithmetic through with its assumptions visible.

What this handbook gives you

  • Compare competing process routes on the terms that actually decide them, including geometry, achievable tolerance, material behavior, tooling cost, and production volume.
  • Size and check real process parameters using 72 worked reference calculations that state their assumptions in full, so the method transfers to your own parts and numbers.
  • Work from 230 numbered equations in consistent SI-first notation, so a symbol means the same thing in the forming chapter as it does in the machining chapter.
  • Read a drawing tolerance back to the process capability that has to deliver it, and forward to the inspection method that will verify it.
  • Judge when an additive route genuinely beats a subtractive one, using build rate and cost structure rather than enthusiasm.
  • Find material fast through 50 purpose-drawn figures, 44 reference tables, a detailed contents list, a 76-entry glossary, four appendices, and an index.

Key topics covered

The manufacturing enterprise and process economics; engineering materials; casting and solidification; powder processing and sintering; bulk deformation and sheet-metal forming; machining and cutting mechanics; CNC and multi-axis programming; additive manufacturing; welding, brazing, and mechanical joining; surface engineering and heat treatment; micro, nano, and electronics manufacturing; industrial automation and control; robotics and machine vision; dimensional metrology, inspection, and non-destructive testing; statistical process control and quality engineering; digital manufacturing architectures; predictive maintenance and manufacturing security; and energy, materials, and lifecycle practice.

Who this handbook is for

Written for practicing manufacturing, mechanical, industrial, and process engineers, for production, quality, and metrology staff, for automation and controls engineers, for technicians moving into engineering roles, and for senior undergraduate and graduate students who would rather own one dependable reference than a shelf of partial ones.

Open the handbook at the process you are deciding on today, work the calculation through, and keep it within reach for the next one.
