A ruined man kneels at a midnight crossroads with six pennies, a dead rat, and his mother’s wedding ring. When a demon answers, he mistakes recognition for love and is asked to prove his devotion with blood.

A travelling grave-stone mason is hired to restore the burial ground of a decaying fenland estate. But the epitaphs he is ordered to carve belong to people still alive, and each completed inscription becomes a death sentence written in stone.

An ancient female demon, chained beneath a lighthouse for three hundred years, remembers sunlight by its taste. Above her, a village has turned cruelty into tradition, lowering men into the dark once a year and calling sacrifice salvation.

A wounded knight returns from war to his snowbound castle, expecting grief and mourning. Instead, he finds his wife wrapped in a wolfskin cloak, the nursery locked with iron, and their dead child returned from the grave hungry.
