"The answer came to me in a quiet thunderclap, beautiful and soft yet with an ultraviolet intensity that I could countenance. After that unforgettable Tuesday afternoon, I lived in a golden glowing cloud for weeks," says the author. But from the long and winding cavalcade of the human spectacle, we have pondered the same question. Why are we here? It is often posed in lonely silence because the notion that there could be an answer seems hopelessly absurd. Even to whisper it might cause embarrassment. However, if asked aloud, it is usually done rhetorically, for it appears to be a question with only a vaguely corresponding reply or perhaps no answer at all. Can we deduce the human predicament in which we languish until we reach its irreducible equation and from there, arrive at the answer? Or is this a game of half-witted and contradictory philosophical attempts that wastes time and energy? Or, could the reason we are here be so stunningly apparent that we have an aversion to its simplicity? That elusive rationale for our existence is presented here in straightforward terms that are easily understood and entertaining to read. This uncomplicated answer to that age-old cryptogram, written in simple terms, appeals to the intellect without overthinking the subject. Indeed, we feel that the reader will enjoy this inquiry into that enigmatic riddle, the answer to which eclipses contemporary taboos and mores, which are often a substitute for meaning. For, this answer is time transcendent. The practicality of the essays How to Eat and How to Sleep is equally entertaining and insightful. Reading A Vacation in Time is another pleasing experience. And many readers might agree that The Warmth of the Sun is essential knowledge. Yet the title essay, Why We Are Here, could change one's view of the world. So, Hardcastle Publishing cordially invites you to read and enjoy this splendid little book of essays.

After a three-year tour of duty with the army, Hathaway studied the social sciences in North America and Europe, earning a bachelor's and a master's degree. He traveled the world for the next two years visiting twenty-four countries on five continents. Then settling into his writing, he authored several books, including works of philosophy, psychology, ecology, novels, short stories, screenplays, poems, epic verse, and the retelling of The Odyssey in heroic couplet. He has also written scholarly papers, articles, an Elizabethan stage play, and even the original libretto, lyrics, and melodies of a full-length classical operatic musical featuring twenty-seven new songs. In his free time, he sometimes paints and draws. Some people feel that his graphite portrait of Lord Nelson may be one of the better likenesses of Nelson. Hathaway has been an active wildlife conservationist for several years, focusing on protecting elephant herds in Sub-Sahara Africa. He has a small yet busy wild bird sanctuary at his home in the United States, hosting over twenty-eight species of wild birds. Lady Jane Grey was Phillip's first cousin and several members of the houses of Stewart, Hanover, and Tudor were aunts, uncles and cousins. His family were among the early settlers in the British Colonies, fought in the Revolutionary War, and were charter members of the Unites States of America.
