Some may say this book goes wayyy over the line in one manner or another: perhaps too human, too personal, too outrageous, too ridiculous, too judgy, too accepting , too hard, too soft, too naïve, too cynical … “Over the line” . Well in fact, that is what this book is really all about, a simple question: “How far is too far… where is ‘the line’? ” Despite the plot resembling something between a psychological thriller and a mystery romance novel, ”Along The Dotted Line” is really more of a conceptual thought experiment. At face value, the premise centers primarily around the interweaving of 3 main characters: a “nice” sadist obsessed with re-framing and pushing the boundaries (whatever they may be), a jaded homicide detective completely addicted to risk for the thrill of risk and the woman entangled with them both. The latter of the three, who also serves as a first-person narrator, is attempting to unravel herself from her growing PTSD – and determining where one ends and the other begins – all while on a rage fueled quest to get justice at (almost) any cost. Along the way she wrestles with one overarching question- the conceptual scaffolding that the plot hangs on: “Where is the line?” This question comes up not only in how she views those around her and their motivation, but also, her own.
