Inhaltsangabe

Nearly half of Canadians would not describe their mental health as excellent or very good. Across Trinidad & Tobago and the wider Caribbean, many more are quietly carrying the same weight, often taught from childhood to put everyone else first and keep their own struggles to themselves. Most of us learn early how to take care of other people. We become the parent, the partner, the employee, the caregiver, the peacemaker, and the one everyone else leans on. Somewhere along the way, the relationship we have with ourselves gets pushed to the bottom of the list, until we can't remember what we actually want, or why we feel so tired, or when we stopped liking the person in the mirror. No one teaches you how to love yourself without feeling selfish. No one explains the difference between self-love and narcissism, how to quiet the critic in your own head, how to keep a promise to yourself, or what to do when the life you built around everyone else suddenly asks, "Now what?" That's what they forget to tell you. Written from both lived experience and more than thirty years as a mental health professional, Selflove: What They Forget To Tell You is an honest, practical, and often funny guide to finding your way back to yourself. With real tools, journaling prompts, and stories from both sides of the therapy room, it's for anyone who has given so much to others that they forgot to save some for themselves. ...and here begins my story.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Dr. Caron Leid is a licensed mental health professional, educator, and advocate with more than twenty years of experience in counselling, research, and curriculum development. Her work is rooted in compassion, authenticity, and a deep understanding of the human experience. Caron's journey began long before her credentials. As an informal caregiver for her mother for two decades while raising her son as a single parent, she gained firsthand insight into the emotional and practical realities of caregiving. That lived experience shaped her mission to advocate for Alzheimer's awareness and caregiver support worldwide. She has since spoken at national and international conferences, shared her expertise on CTV National News, and published research and articles on dementia and caregiver well-being. She is the author of several books, including Alzheimer's: What They Forget to Tell You, Dementia & the Brain, Self-Love: What They Forget to Tell You, and Grief: What They Forget to Tell You. And this B.S and other childhood tales editions. Her writing blends clinical knowledge with lived wisdom, offering guidance for those navigating caregiving, healing, and self-discovery. Beyond her counselling practice, Caron designs training programs for mental health professionals and human services teams, integrating trauma-informed, experiential, and inclusive approaches to learning. She also channels her belief in holistic self-love into her Canadian-made skincare and cosmetics line, created to remind others that healing begins within but deserves to shine outward too. Through her private practice, public advocacy, and creative work, Caron continues to empower individuals to reclaim their stories, rediscover purpose, and live authentically-one imperfect, courageous step at a time. ......And yes, she's still working on her own inflexible standards¿
