Alberto S.B. is a Cuban-born author and entrepreneur based in El Paso, Texas. Born in Havana's Vedado neighborhood, he is a direct descendant of the Stout and Brown family lines chronicled in this book. His research into his own family history - spanning Cuba, Mexico, and the American Southwest - led him to uncover the extraordinary story of two Buffalo Soldier ancestors who survived the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine.
What the Maine Could Not Sink is the result of years of genealogical research and a lifelong desire to preserve his family's legacy. Alberto continues to write and share the histories that connect generations across borders and centuries.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In 1898, the battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, igniting the Spanish-American War and reshaping the destinies of two families forever. What the Maine Could Not Sink traces six generations of a family born from that moment of fire and chaos.Thomas Stout and Ernie Brown, two Buffalo Soldiers of the storied 9th Cavalry Regiment, survived the disaster that claimed so many. Their courage under fire was only the beginning of a story that would carry their descendants across Cuba, Mexico, Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Washington D.C.This is more than a war story. It is a deeply personal family memoir, painstakingly researched and lovingly written by a direct descendant of both the Stout and Brown lines. It follows the threads of two bloodlines separated by history and reunited generations later, weaving together military valor, migration, resilience, and identity across borders and eras. From the trenches of the Spanish-American War to the streets of El Paso, from the plains where Buffalo Soldiers once rode to the family reunions that brought two branches back together after a century apart, this book is a testament to survival, memory, and the unbreakable threads that connect us to those who came before. For readers of military history, genealogy, and multigenerational family sagas, What the Maine Could Not Sink offers a rare and intimate look at how one explosion in 1898 shaped the lives of a family that refused to be forgotten.
