Mara has planned for six months on the Appalachian Trail. She has arranged her leave from her engineering job in Richmond, packed her maps, and given herself one clear destination: Maine. She hasn't planned on Theo, a restoration carpenter from Bangor who makes her laugh over a very disappointing camp dinner.
They meet at Hawk Mountain on their first evening and keep finding reasons to walk together. Shared miles become shared jokes, quiet company, and the sort of attention Mara isn't used to accepting. Theo is used to being useful. Mara is used to keeping her own life in order. Neither quite knows what to do when caring for someone means leaving them room to choose.
As the trail leads them toward Virginia, a friendship begins to ask for more. But with different lives waiting at the other end of the walk, how much of her carefully made plan is Mara willing to reconsider?
