Should you start a business of your own - and is consulting the right one? Most people who want to work for themselves never get past the first question. They know they have the skills. What they do not have is a straight answer about whether the leap is worth taking, what it costs, and what the first year actually looks like when the salary stops. This book answers that question before it answers any other. Written for the technically capable and commercially uncertain, it walks through the decisions a first-time consultant faces in the order they actually arrive. Whether independent consulting suits how you want to work. How to structure and register the business so you are not unpicking it two years later. What it takes to find the first client, and the second. How to price work when you have no track record to point at. And what separates the consultants who last from the ones who quietly go back to a salary. The 2026 edition adds what the earlier guides could not cover. Artificial intelligence and offshore delivery have changed what a small consultancy can credibly offer and what clients now expect it to know. Four new chapters cover where AI and automation genuinely fit inside a consulting practice, when offshore delivery makes sense and when it does not, why your HR systems break before your sales systems do, and the compliance requirements that catch new firms out. Written by an operator, not a career author. Srikanth Merianda has spent close to three decades building and running technology consulting and staffing businesses on both sides of the offshore model. The advice here is what he would tell someone sitting across a table asking whether to do this. If you are weighing up starting a business, this will tell you what you are actually signing up for - including, if it applies, that now is not the moment.

Srikanth Merianda is a developer, entrepreneur and investor with nearly three decades of experience as both employee and employer. He began his career as a software engineer, project manager and architect at Convergys, Nortel Networks and BlackBerry, working on mission-critical systems - experience that still shapes how he assesses technical risk today. He has since founded and grown companies spanning IT and healthcare staffing, business process outsourcing and software development, including an IT staffing and technology firm serving clients across the United States and Canada, a BPO operation in India providing offshore back-office and staffing support, and CloudSource HRM, a workforce-intelligence and job-exchange platform. He has taken each through start-up, survival, turnaround and growth. He also helps other businesses prepare for AI: through Shronos.ai he assesses where automation genuinely fits an organisation's operations, and through Sangra.ai he leads the implementation once that assessment is done. He is a certified Advanced RPA Professional across UiPath, Automation Anywhere and Blue Prism. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science from Mississippi State University. He writes at srikanthmerianda.com.
