Inhaltsangabe

The Legend of the Blue Dog of Rose Hill uncovers one of Maryland’s most enduring and mysterious regional legends.

Rooted in colonial Charles County history, this book explores the documented existence of the Rose Hill plantation, the violent death of its owner in the late 1700s, and the burial practices that shaped what would become a two-century-old ghost story. At the center of the legend stands a loyal dog who refused to leave his master’s grave — and whose spirit, many claim, still guards the hill.

Blending archival research, colonial records, burial customs, Civil War-era accounts, and generations of oral tradition, this volume separates historical fact from folklore while honoring the power of both.

Was the Blue Dog a trick of moonlight reflecting off lime-covered fur?
A community’s way of processing tragedy?
Or something that never truly left Rose Hill?

More than a ghost story, this book is a study of memory, loyalty, and how place shapes legend in Maryland history.
