In the heart of the 18th-century Holy Roman Empire, one man dared to suggest that the gap between human and beast was a mere illusion. Friedrich Gabriel Sulzer was not just a physician to the aristocracy or a pioneer in midwifery; he was a revolutionary who found the secrets of existence in the unlikeliest of places.Hamster Man follows the extraordinary life of a doctor who moved seamlessly between the gilded courts of the Musenhof and the rugged world of veterinary science. While his peers focused on human superiority, Sulzer became obsessed with the European hamster. Through meticulous observation, he developed a radical philosophy: if animals possess such complex biological and social lives, do they not deserve the same fundamental rights as Homo sapiens? From his birth in Gotha to his final days in the Kingdom of Hanover, Sulzer's journey is one of scientific rigor and philosophical bravery. He dismantled long-standing hierarchies, arguing for the equal value of all living beings. Marsena Shane masterfully brings to life this forgotten figure of the Enlightenment, weaving together medical history, mineralogy, and the early foundations of animal rights. This is more than a biography; it is a profound exploration of what it means to be alive and the doctor who saw the soul in every creature.

A Southern California girl from the Garden Grove suburbs who began her obsession with creative writing as a student in her elementary school circa 1970s, Marsena Shane began her literary career as soon as she graduated high school and gained her first job, a local book store clerk, before a women's fitness tutor introduced her to a New York publisher at Critic's Choice Paperbacks who published her first novella in mass market paperback, Sweet Dreams, Lady Moon. She became both a ghost writer and a work-for-hire, publishing her own series of fitness self-help books soon after, starting with Great Legs in Six Weeks (1988) which became The Easy Way to Great Legs, as well as Nancy: A Reagan Biography (formerly Nancy: Biography of the First Lady), and subsequent works of fiction such as June Park and The Martian Coal Miner. Currently, Ms. Shane now lives in Northern California with her many beloved cats.
