The Asian water monitor is one of the largest and most widely distributed species within the genus Varanus, which comprises over 70 recognized monitor lizard species. Belonging to the family Varanidae and the order Squamata, V. salvator is closely related to the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), sharing ancestral traits with other large carnivorous reptiles.
