Faithful reprint of the 1855 edition for improved manuscript quality and clarity, with illustrations.
Cardinal Wiseman admirably writes about the lives of the martyrs St. Agnes, St. Sebastian, and others, and intertwines their lives together by composing a beautiful narrative, not meant to be a strict historical account, but an inspiring yet recreational read for true Catholics, to be consoled in modern times, in which the Catholic Faith is grievously persecuted. The error of modernism and especially rationalism was already in it's flowering in the times of Cardinal Wiseman, and so he wished to provide Catholics with the holy memory of these heroic Catholics of old, to inspire them to persevere in the Faith for which the martyrs shed their blood. The author draws from the Roman Breviary and the Roman Martyrology, as well as his own knowledge of ancient Roman history to portray a realistic picture of those early days in the Church.
