Research into the lives, customs, voyages, and deeds of several illustrious Portuguese who wrote their names in the pages of maritime history between the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century is the source of the novel The Unknown Knight of the Order of Christ: Traveling on a Caravel through the Tenebrous Sea, which mixes fiction and history, using the most concrete information about the lives of famous figures such as Christopher Columbus, Diogo Cão, etc. To write The Unknown Knight of the Order of Christ: Traveling on a Caravel through the Tenebrous Sea, A Continent Too Far, and its sequel, A Passage To Hope: Traveling on a Caravel in Search of the Cape of Storms, all in the series The Adventures of a Legendary Knight of the Order of Christ, the author applied the same formula used in his other novels. The main figures whose lives provided sufficient inspiration to structure the novel are Christopher Columbus, Diogo Cão, King Dom Afonso V, King Dom João II, many Knights Templar, and many more of the Order of Christ, among others. The discovery by Iberian navigators of the oceanic routes to the East and West Indies is considered the greatest event since the world's creation, apart from the incarnation and death of the One who created it. It therefore deserved a novel bringing the reader details of that great undertaking.
