Inhaltsangabe

Behind the Brick Walls: The Secrets of AMHI is a chilling true account of the Augusta Mental Health Institute in Maine—a place meant for healing that became a symbol of suffering. Built in 1840 and originally used to store ammunition, the institution’s red brick walls would go on to hold thousands of people society wanted to forget.

Through survivor accounts, historical records, and long-buried newspaper clippings, this book exposes decades of abuse, overcrowding, medical neglect, and staff misconduct. Patients were silenced. Children were restrained. Justice was rare.

Told with empathy and a relentless eye for truth, Behind the Brick Walls is not just a history—it’s a reckoning. For the voices that were lost, for the families still searching for answers, and for a system still struggling to do better—this book refuses to look away.
