During almost 35 years in the industry, of which over 20 years as a maintenance engineer, I have seen how our profession has evolved from quite manual routines to becoming increasingly data-driven and technologically advanced. I have a background as an engineer and have taken vocational school education twice – but most importantly, the experience I have gained in practice, out in the field. This experience has taught me how crucial it is that maintenance is not just seen as repairs after failures, but that it is planned and integrated strategically to ensure reliable, safe and profitable operation.
This book is the result of my passion for the maintenance profession, combined with new technology. The text is generated using artificial intelligence (AI), a tool that I believe will play an increasingly important role in the years to come. For many of us who have worked in the industry for a long time, it may seem unusual to have a “digital assistant” put together theory, methods and examples. However, I believe that the combination of extensive experience, solid education and an openness to new digital opportunities allows us to elevate the maintenance profession to a whole new level.
The goal of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of World Class Maintenance concepts – from basic methods such as 5S, RCM, Lean and tribology, to modern topics such as IIoT, Big Data, Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. I hope that you, as a reader, will find inspiration and practical benefit from the content, whether you are new to the profession or have extensive experience. AI has helped to collect and structure the material, but it is my own knowledge, commitment and heart for maintenance that have shaped the form and content of the book.
Maintenance is not just “fixing things”, but a strategic and systematic approach to value creation. When machines, sensors, data and people interact in the right way, great opportunities open up for increased profitability, reduced accidents, better quality and more sustainable use of resources. I hope this book can help show the way forward, while also building a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and modern, digital solutions.
