Beyond the Pale: Narratives and Reflections of a Left-Wing Jewish Queer is the autobiography of an octogenarian Queer man and his struggle to become his authentic self in spite of the many hurdles, both individual and social-political, that stood in his way. It is an examination of his evolving identities as gay, Jewish, and left-wing, beginning at a time when homosexuality was regarded as a perversion, antisemitism was a factor of daily life, and all Americans, whatever their status, were encouraged to identify themselves as middle-class. Likosky is particularly adept in illustrating how the personal and the political intertwine, as he is in recording his odyssey from a tribal provincialism to a global cosmopolitanism.
