In 1968 a young, naive, immature man, just turned 18, was accepted by Voluntary Service Overseas to teach for a year in Papua New Guinea. He was the first to be placed into the interior and was sent to a mission station next to a village called Giri, not far from the mighty Ramu River. He did not return to the UK for two years and during that time he experienced every emotion, from despair and fear to pure joy and laughter.
The book tells his story. It is a memoir, an adventure book, a coming-of-age story and a window into the lives of people whose culture and environment have hardly changed for a thousand years.
He did and saw the most extraordinary things.
No one now will have the same experiences. Things have changed over time of course, but also mining and prospecting are polluting the rivers, taking away people's livelihoods and food supplies and even destroying whole villages for the sake of company profits.
The book also contains many short, traditional stories from all over New Guinea. Each one was told to the author personally.
30% of all royalties from this book will be divided equally between three charities, two because of their involvement in the story and one because it is so dear to the author's heart. They are VSO, The Sacred Lands Film Project and Animals Asia.
