Dirk Neerdorf is CEO of Neerdorf Securities, a Dutch finance house that specialises in providing discreet loan facilities to individuals and businesses that for whatever reason, need their arrangements to be as far under the radar as is possible. Dirk and his board of directors (his twin son’s) approve a large draw down service that is organised on behalf of the Catholic Church by one of its senior Cardinals, George De Cathay. All goes well until the loan falls into default and Neerdorf must travel to the Vatican to face up to De Cathay and his colleagues in an attempt to get the facility back on track. Whilst there, Neerdorf suspects that there are serious problems afoot, and the loan isn’t as secure as was initially thought.
De Cathay makes good the default and pays over the next instalment in cash which Neerdorf accepts but with reservations and returns to his base, on the island of Kos where he intends to deposit the cash in a holding bank.
The story introduces the reader to some of De Cathays colleagues, one of whom, Paul Hindle, as Head of Security holds a close affinity with Georges and is responsible for arranging some of his more unorthodox pastimes and pleasures, including the provision of regular prostitutes flown in from Amsterdam.
De Cathay and Hindle employ the services of a German couple, a thief, and an assassin, to recover the cash and make sure Neerdorf is dealt with, but it doesn’t go exactly to plan. The cash is recovered but the attempt to kill Neerdorf fails as it does a few more times over the course of the story.
Whilst this is going on, another senior Cardinal, Eduardo Musso, suspects that De Cathay is up to no good and sets out to try and expose him and his wrong doings, in order to protect the Church and The Pope from scandal. The question is though, what really drives Musso, is it to look after the interests of the Church or could it be to further his own position?
The German couple are assisted by senior people within the Greek police force to escape and make their way to safety in Brazil. Whilst that is happening both Hindle and De Cathay make further failed attempts to kill off Neerdorf and these incidents start to raise some alarm in a junior police officer, whose brief is to quickly and quietly, shut down the investigation into the attempt on Neerdorf’s life. As his work progresses, he starts to uncover things that some people would rather are left alone. The officer visits The Vatican to interview De Cathay and pays the ultimate price for being diligent and digging maybe a little too deeply.
As things comes to a close, Musso collates sufficient evidence of De Cathays activities including embezzlement, attempted murder and theft and confronts the Cardinal with his findings. The Italian police also establish a link between the attacks on Neerdorf and De Cathay and are on the way to arrest him. Realising that his time is up, De Cathay takes his own life after providing Hindle with his ‘box of secrets’ and a way out from being implicated in the wrong doings.
Neerdorf recovers but not before a further attempt is made on his life in which his wife is killed.
This part of the story ends with Musso tying up loose ends with Hindle and then appearing to instruct the German couple on a new murderous mission.
