Born the son of peasants in 1882, my grandfather Chou Fu-chuan entered an American missionaries’s school, During the Boxer Rebellion, he endured the Siege of Peking with the missionaries. He obtained a Theology degree, followed by a Ph.D degree from Syracuse University. He lived through the struggle of Sun Yat-sen’s Chinese Republic, the Japanese invasaion during the Second World War, the civil war between Mao Zedong and Chiang Kaishek,and the takeover of China by the Communists.

Interspersed are chapters on how his descendants cope with present day China under the Chinese Communist Party. This novel is a blend of history and fictional scenes enriched by family stories.
