Gelhorne High School’s Rolling Stone
Everyone knew “Roller Girl,” the sole student in school who got around campus in a wheelchair. What most people didn’t care to find out about Yvette Stone was that the spina bifida she’d had since birth didn’t define her.
Yvette had friends. She went to summer camp for kids with disabilities. She played the flute in the band. She was a Trekkie and lover of old movies.
It seemed to Yvette that life just rolled along in the grooves made by her wheelchair. She accepted she’d never have the kind of social life her popular older sister enjoyed. She was convinced her life would continue forever with its relentless sameness.
Turns out, she was wrong about some things.
