For more than 200 years, Christ Church Cathedral has been a leader in the community of Cincinnati, Ohio. This Episcopal congregation has a storied history, with some notable figures involved in the life of the church, including U.S. President William Henry Harrison and William Procter, the founder of the consumer giant, Procter & Gamble.
Prompted by a charge from the diocese's bishop for congregations to examine their history and the ways in which the church has served—and failed—to serve the people, a group from Christ Church led a deep exploration into the life of the faith community. They found a church that was, at times, deeply committed to the love and care of neighbor and was also, at times, complicit, directly or indirectly, to injustice. "Re-collecting" this history and telling the truth is the first step in acknowledging where God's people have fallen short. This written history seeks to inspire people of faith to do the difficult but vital work of telling the truth, to learn from the past, and to grow together in faith, hope, and love.
