Francis Grierson's, The Valley of Shadows, is truly a lost American classic. Written at the dawn of the twentieth century, the author has remarkably captured his adventures and observations as a child growing up on the prairies of Illinois in the years leading up the Civil War, in a region that was neither North nor South; neither for slavery nor against it; and how their small family farm unexpectedly became an unscheduled stop on the Underground Railroad.
Written in an authentic vernacular of the time, and populated by larger than life characters, Grierson has woven a tale of excitement and mystery, set in a Garden of Eden of wildlife and nature. The prose and dialogue is like Shakespeare of the prairie. It reads like a cross between Tom Sawyer and Uncle Tom's Cabin, and stands out among all of the other books written about that era.
Published over a century ago, with several editions released in the interim, The Valley of Shadows has some ardent admirers, and though the enthusiasm is great, the numbers are very small. The reading process can be very challenging, almost prohibitive, in that Grierson created his own protocol to phonetically express the vernacular as it was spoken. Most who attempted it were unable to finish it.
This annotated edition fixes that problem. The dialogue has been completely reedited to express it in a more established and recognizable format that is easier to read, understand, and comprehend. Though there may be a slight diminishing in the individual character voices, this is more than made up for in its easier readability and higher enjoyment factor.
Now that this challenge has been resolved, I am hopeful it will finally find its audience, and gain the broader circulation that has escaped it for over a century. The Valley of Shadows, truly is a story worth telling, and it is still relevant; especially in today's turbulent times which mirror much of the turmoil of that period before the Civil War.
I believe that contemporary readers will enjoy and appreciate this very unique insight into some of the most harrowing times in our nation's history.
