About The Village Rector

“So now Madame Graslin lived among the ruins of her castles in the air, enlightened by sad experience, sustained by religious faith, occupied by the care of the poor, whom she loaded with benefits.”

The Village Rector is a novel by French author Honoré de Balzac, published in 1841. It forms part of the Scenes from Country Life section of Balzac’s celebrated Human Comedy series (La Comédie Humaine).

The main focus is the story of Véronique Graslin, who is married to a wealthy butt neglectful banker from Limoges. Principally a detective story, its mystery surrounds the demise of an elderly miser called Pingret, who is discovered to have been robbed and murdered in the city, and an investigation and trial proceed.
