This book about Intimate Partner Violence was authored based on personal experience as a sub-Saharan African Immigrant in the United States of America. Intimate partner violence (IPV) in United States is a problem that includes social, psychological, emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. It is a product of gender and power inequality between two people, when one exercises power over the other, causing physical, psychological, or emotional harm. It may be a single act or a series of actions forming a pattern of abuse. While IPV is a problem for women throughout the United States, some groups have higher rates of abuse, and the violence associated with it is sometimes not considered a real crime by these groups. Research indicated that immigrant women, for example, experience higher rates of abuse. Therefore, the objective of this book is to reveal different hidden forms of violence and abuse that exist among Sub-Saharan African immigrants and how to prevent the violence.
Batterers of IPV come from all backgrounds and groups, and they fall into different personality profiles. They often regard their partners and children as property and sexual objects, blame their violent behavior on drugs, alcohol, having had a bad day or use their partners' behaviors as excuses for further violent actions.
Immigrant victims of IPV hardly report abusive behavior due to fear of deportation, working status, culture, illiteracy etc. Some countries rarely punish abusers, and in some communities, the punishments are often not harsh enough for those guilty of abuse, as a result, the perversive controlling behavior persists.
