Going through breast cancer was a life-changing experience. I have been a public health professional and nonprofit health executive for over 40 years. However, when it came time for me to face my own cancer diagnosis, I realized that I had a lot to learn.

I had to refocus, listen, learn and adjust my lifestyle. Regardless of the stage or type of cancer, the initial impact often leads to similar questions: How did this happen or why me God? And, then there’s denial; there are tears. There are also practical questions and decisions about career, business, family responsibilities, along with medical care options. My story shares how I put had to put life as usual on hold and figure out this new journey – with all of its twists, turns, unknowns, unexpected blessings and celebrations. I also share practical tips on how to navigate, advocate and make fully informed decisions for yourself and loved ones when seeking medical care during such a critical time.

It is my hope that my story will illuminate what women face when they are confronted with this unexpected diagnosis. And, I add my voice to the call and national campaign for greater awareness and support for African American women’s health.
