As people pour out of war torn Ukraine humanity is pulling together to give support with food, clothing, medical supplies, offers of housing and welcoming these refugees into our communities. In the coming weeks and months you can expect to meet Ukrainian people who have had to leave their homes. Join me on a language learning journey as we attempt to make their stays with us a little bit easier. Ukrainian is a complex language with a different alphabet, but as you read, you will discover that YOU CAN begin to understand and speak, and it all starts here!
In this short book you will meet many Ukrainian words embedded in English text, and you will find that you can recognise and understand them! Lessons give you key phrases and vocab that you are encouraged to speak aloud. Regular tests give you the chance to prove your knowledge to yourself. With information from the Refugee Council, as well as cultural information about Ukraine, you will be in a good position to offer the best welcome possible, given the awful circumstances.
Teachers in our communities may soon be welcoming Ukrainian children into their classrooms. If you work in education, the final section in the book provides a school-based phrasebook so that you can prepare yourself and your students by choosing your favourite Ukrainian things to say.
Learning a new language isn't something that just happens. It takes time and energy. But this book will show you that it isn't difficult, it is possible, and you can do it, one day at a time.
