The Story
This is the story of one Little Dino who doesn’t understand why he finds the world so overwhelming and difficult. The story is written from Little Dino's perspective, and takes the reader through a journey, describing his daily struggles, his path to discovering he's autistic, and his realisation of the amazing possibilities ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) presents.
Guided by the voice of the authors autistic son, the story centres around a mother and child bond, sending a message that with a little support, anything is possible.
A simple yet powerful story that aims to help parents explain the diagnosis of ASD to their Little Dino’s; and be a useful tool to be referred back to time and time again.
Written in easy rhyming verse, the story is designed to be shared and explored between adult and child. It makes the perfect gift for young autistics, those working with Autistic children, and parents of an Autastic child, pre or post diagnosis.
The book is illustrated by the author’s 12 year old daughter, who worked with her autistic brother to ensure his preferred style of art and approval was paramount to the process.
The Reason
"Sitting in the car after the appointment, the pile of leaflets I had been given caught my eye. I had already planned how I was going to tell my son about the diagnosis, but I couldn’t help but question why on earth there was not one single leaflet aimed at my son? Not one piece of paper to help him understand the lifetime tag he had just been given. I guess this is when the “Little Dino’s Autastic Gift” really began.
I do not profess to be an expert on autism of any kind. I am, however, an expert on loving my son, and I will never again be left out in the corridor whilst others decide on the fate of my son. We parents walk the autism balancing act every day. We deal with fallouts, shutdowns, meltdowns, overloads, judgements, and requests upon request from various professionals. We also have the honour of raising these amazing children, that see the world in a refreshing way. That says it, exactly how it is. That brings the most wonderful joy to our lives with the simplest task."
Amanda J. Flack
The author asks that all communities respect her son's choice not to have his name visibly displayed anywhere on the book, despite his huge contribution to the book.
