This is a comprehensive yet abbreviated history of two rural branch experiment stations that serve Oregon’s semi-arid, rainfed wheat industry; the Pendleton and Sherman Stations of the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center, and the USDA-ARS Columbia Plateau Conservation Research Center, co-located with the Pendleton Station. Scientists at these stations and research centers have been addressing the needs of dryland agriculture in the Inland Pacific Northwest for more than a century.This book is dedicated to the three earliest administrators. The 30 subject-matter chapters include a history of the regions before the stations were established, a summary of the establishment process for each station and the research centers, the climates of the region, locations of on-station and off-station experiments, and descriptions of research on tillage systems, crop rotations, alternate crops, weeds, plant pathology, insect pests, soil chemistry, soil water, plant growth and development, extension education, research funding, and staff contributions to agricultural practice, to science and society, and to nearby communities. Eleven appendices provide listings of all administrators, scientists and extensionists, and lists of 895 technical publications (from 1909 to 2019), annual reports, and replications of early documents, including the first Sherman Station Annual Report (1910), the first Pendleton Station Annual Report (1930), original land deeds, and amendments to land deeds.The Sherman Branch Experiment Station, at Moro, was established in 1909. The Pendleton Branch Experiment Station, near Pendleton, was established in 1928. These stations were founded by the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station and the United Stated Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Plant Industry. They were established to conduct research to support the livelihoods of farmers practicing dryland agriculture, the definition of which is presented in the preface to this book. The stations were merged administratively during the 1930s and, since 1970, were merged again as the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center. The Bureau of Plant Industry (now U.S. Department of Agriculture) has maintained a continuous presence at both stations and, in 1970, the unit near Pendleton was re-organized as the Columbia Plateau Conservation Research Center. This is the first comprehensive summary of the research, facilities, funding, successes, failures, technical publications, and other facets of research in a semiarid region of the northwestern USA.
