Inhaltsangabe

Imperial Prefect and Knight of Rome Otto Longius, the “Kingkiller”, lounged on a sofa in the shade of his villa overlooking his sunlit estate outside Luca. He was happy to be at home with his wife, Lollia, his family and household after his exertions on behalf of the Emperor in Spain. His friend and companion on the recent mission, Prefect of Engineers Lucius Taurius Longius, “Boxer” was now stationed in the city which added to his general sense of well-being since they often spent time with each other. In Rome, Emperor Augustus Caesar was far from content. He sometimes thought he was little more than a juggler but instead of knives or batons, armies, ambitious men, ambassadors, provinces, the senate, finance and the grain supply whirled through his hands day and night. Drop one and the result would be disastrous for Rome. And, to make everything worse, a new difficulty arose as soon as one was resolved and old conflicts broke out again like incurable ulcers. A potentially dangerous situation had developed which must be swiftly dealt with so his mind turned on those able men at his command who he could trust to act on his behalf. Otto was reading as he sipped his cooled, watered wine. The scroll he had selected at random was the works of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus. “Change is the one constant thing in this life,” Otto idly read. He should have taken the quotation as an omen. “Menities,” Augustus said to his secretary, “I believe I have a task for Otto and Boxer.”
