Melissa Martel is the daughter of the governor's assistant in France. Part of his job includes moving from one place to another to serve the people of France. On her first voyage to their new home, the ship is overrun with pirates. Melissa is dragged away from her parents by the pirate Captain Frank Cobinski. When no one is able to stop him, Melissa falls from his grasp into the ocean below. A shipmate sees the tragedy unfold and runs to the side of the ship diving in to save her. He grabs her and swims away helping her to avoid the pirates until they sail away. His name is Burt Corbet and he wins the favor of her father by helping Melissa back onto the ship when it is safe. France and Spain continue to be harassed by pirates as Melissa's life is effected too.
