This was published in its original form as an Advent Journal a few years ago. Because this is so all-encompassing, I have now redone it as a Study Journal titled “Why the Shepherds?” Furthermore, after publishing this revised version in the fall of 2020, I was made aware of a video by Dr. Erez Soref, president of One For Israel, which explained beautifully the meaning of the manger as well as the importance of Jesus the Christ being born in Bethlehem. Therefore, an Addendum has been added at the back of this journal to present this important information for your further study.
If I were permitted to tell only one part of the beautiful Christmas story, I would tell the part about the shepherds. Why? Because those 13 verses contain everything about Christmas: Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
The story of the shepherds is usually simply presented as another part of what happened without giving it any extraordinary importance. The shepherds and angels make a nice addition to Christmas plays, and they add an important balance to Nativity scenes. Of course, the central and most critical focus, as it should be, is on the baby, Christ, the only reason we have Christmas. But the shepherds and the whole reason they even are part of Christmas is so very important. Yet this is usually given only a passing acknowledgement.
But the story of sheep and shepherds goes back even before the beginning of our world. The Bible tells us that Jesus the Christ is the Lamb of God Who was slain from the foundations of the earth. Sheep and shepherds are referred to throughout the Old Testament, and in the New Testament, Jesus becomes identified as the Good Shepherd.
This Study Journal opens with the joyous events of Christmas Eve and then takes us back through some of the events throughout time that led up to this moment. Finally, we will look at the importance of these particular shepherds in God’s mission for us all.
And so, as we begin the night with the shepherds, let us look back at who they actually were, why they were so important, and how they were chosen by God from the foundation of the world.
