Inhaltsangabe

  • A vivid nineteenth-century account of the Albanians at a decisive moment in Balkan and Ottoman history.

The Albanians brings together two chapters from George Finlay’s History of the Greek Revolution (1861): “The Albanians” and “Sultan Mahmud and Ali Pasha of Joannina.” Finlay, a British historian and Philhellene who travelled to Greece during the War of Independence, offers a detailed portrait of Albanian society in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

A particularly valuable part of the book is Finlay’s description of the extensive Albanian communities within Greece. He records Albanian settlements across Attica, Megaris, Boeotia, Euboea, Salamis and Aegina, as well as large areas of the Peloponnese, including Corinthia, Argolis and parts of Arcadia, Achaia, Laconia and Messenia. He also gives special attention to the important Albanian maritime communities of Hydra and Spetzas.

Finlay repeatedly emphasizes the military reputation, courage and fighting qualities of the Albanians, from Ottoman-employed mercenaries to the fiercely independent Suliots, whom he presents as among the most renowned warriors of their time. Albanian soldiers became so prominent in the Ottoman military world that, in Finlay’s account, their reputation influenced even the dress of neighbouring peoples. He writes that Albanian costume, particularly the fustanella, came to be worn by Ottoman Turks and Greeks, and argues that admiration for Albanian military prestige contributed to its later adoption as part of Greek national dress.

The book also explores the social organization of Albanian clans and communities, relations between Muslim and Christian Albanians, their interactions with Greeks and Ottoman Turks, and the extraordinary rise and fall of Ali Pasha of Joannina. A substantial section follows the Suliots, their wars with Ali Pasha, their exile and return, and their eventual involvement in the Greek Revolution.

This edition includes 53 explanatory annotations clarifying Ottoman titles, institutions, historical figures, places, and events, a specially prepared vocabulary of words used in the text, particularly useful for readers whose first language is not English, six historical illustrations, a biographical introduction to George Finlay, and a map for geographical context.

For readers interested in Albanian history, the Albanians of Greece, Balkan history, the Ottoman Empire, Ali Pasha, the Suliots, and the Greek War of Independence, The Albanians offers a fascinating nineteenth-century perspective on a complex and transformative period.
