One critical analytical problem with understanding crises in the Northern region of Nigeria is finding appropriate concepts to explain the insurgent’s activities. Some see the crises as terrorism, criminality, ritual activities, ethno-religious-militarism, rebellion, freedom fighting, revolutionaries and political agitations. The activities of the armed groups carrying out the aforementioned constitute what is referred to as domestic terrorism; which is manifestation of unresolved conflicts in Nigeria and the failure of government.
Northern Nigeria is a region with many security problems. Identifying the security predicament of the region according to its different blocs, Okoli (2021) says that chief among the security problems is the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east. In the North-central region, herdsmen militancy has become a key security concern. North-west Nigeria, which used to be the bastion of security and stability, has been hit hard by banditry.
This suggests that Northern Nigeria is bleeding from all sides as a result of violent conflicts. The actors of these violent conflicts are non-state actors that are multiplying in number and wreaking havoc of unimaginable dimension. In this book, my basic concern is to examine the activities of one of the non-state actors: The Islamic militant group, popularly known as Boko Haram and the impact on girl-child education in northern Nigeria.
